Market Share in IP Pilot helps you understand how much of the relevant opportunity any law firm handles.
It is based on four things:
- Where the filings are made (Publication Authorities)
- What type of filings are included (Priority/Domestic Subsequent/Foreign Subsequent)
- What time period you selected
- Any filters currently applied
Where you can find Market Share in IP Pilot
Market Share is available in multiple sections in IP Pilot:
Law Firm Profile
- Important Clients
- Important Partners
Applicant Profile
- Important Representatives in Overview
- Important Representatives in Case Exchange
How Market Share works
Market Share is always calculated within a relevant scope. That means IP Pilot does not compare a law firm or representative against all possible filings everywhere. Instead, it compares them only within the areas where they are actually active.
The relevant scope is usually based on:
- the Publication Authorities where the law firm or applicant has filed,
- the filing types they handled there,
- the selected time period, and
- any other active filters.
Law Firm Profile: Important Clients
In the Important Clients table, Market Share helps you understand for a given applicant, how much of the relevant filing activity does this law firm handle?
Example: FASKEN and ZTE CORP
Suppose the focus law firm is FASKEN and the applicant is ZTE CORP. IP Pilot calculates the relevant total in three steps.

1. Publication Authorities
IP Pilot first checks which Publication Authorities FASKEN has filed in for ZTE CORP.
If FASKEN has filed for ZTE CORP only in CA (Canada), then only ZTE CORP’s CA filings are included in the relevant scope. These filings can be handled by any representative, not only FASKEN.
2. Type of Filing
Next, IP Pilot checks which filing types FASKEN has handled for ZTE CORP in those Publication Authorities.
For example, if FASKEN has handled only PRIORITY filings for ZTE CORP in CA, the relevant total includes only PRIORITY filings by ZTE CORP in CA. Other filing types, such as Domestic Subsequent or Foreign Subsequent, are excluded.

3. Time Period and Filters
The result is then narrowed by the selected time period and any active filters.
Law Firm Profile: Important Partners
In the Important Partners section, Market Share helps you understand how strong is the relationship between the focus firm and the partner firm?
Market Share is split into Sent and Received to show what share of the focus firm’s case exchanges was sent to or received from a partner firm within the relevant Publication Authorities.
Example: FASKEN and GEYRA KESTEN IP LAW
Suppose the focus firm is FASKEN and the partner firm is GEYRA KESTEN IP LAW.
Chart view
The chart view shows percentage-based Market Share. This is useful when you want a quick view of the relationship in both directions.

List view
The list view shows both the Market Share percentage and the absolute number of cases. This view is better for detailed analysis.

How the Received Relevant Total is calculated
For the Received view, IP Pilot:
- takes the Publication Authorities where FASKEN has filed during the selected time period, and
- counts the total number of cases that GEYRA KESTEN IP LAW has sent into those same Publication Authorities.
The Publication Authorities that FASKEN files in be checked in the Publication Authority chart on the Overview tab.
How the Sent Relevant Total is calculated
For the Sent view, IP Pilot applies a similar logic in the opposite direction.
- IP Pilot first takes the Publication Authorities where GEYRA KESTEN IP LAW has filed during the selected time period.
- It then counts the total number of cases that FASKEN has sent into those same Publication authorities.
The Publication Authorities that GEYRA KESTEN IP LAW files in be checked in the Publication Authority chart on the Overview tab.
Applicant Profile: Important Representatives in Overview
In the Important Representatives chart on the Overview tab, Market Share helps you understand for this applicant, how much of the relevant filing activity does each representative handle?
Example: COCA COLA CO and MEUNIER CARLIN & CURFMAN, LLC
Suppose the applicant is COCA COLA CO and the representative is MEUNIER CARLIN & CURFMAN, LLC. IP Pilot calculates the relevant total as follows.

1. Publication Authorities
IP Pilot first identifies which Publication Authorities MEUNIER CARLIN & CURFMAN, LLC has filed in for COCA COLA CO.
Only those Publication Authorities are included. This means IP Pilot looks only at COCA COLA CO’s filings in those Publication Authorities, including filings handled by any representative, not only Meunier.
2. Type of Filing
Next, IP Pilot checks what filing types MEUNIER CARLIN & CURFMAN, LLC has handled for COCA COLA CO in those Publication Authorities.
The relevant total includes only those filing types by COCA COLA CO in those Publication Authorities. Other filing types are excluded.

3. Time Period and Filters
The result is then limited by the selected time period and any other filters.
Applicant Profile: Important Representatives in Case Exchange
On the Case Exchange tab of the Applicant Profile, Market Share is shown in the Important Representatives chart for both:
- Domestic Cases
- International Cases
Here, the relevant total is calculated in a more direct way.
It is based on the Publication Authorities where the representative has filed for the applicant, within the selected time period and filters.

Example: COCA COLA CO and MEUNIER CARLIN & CURFMAN, LLC
For COCA COLA CO, the relevant total for MEUNIER CARLIN & CURFMAN, LLC is the total number of cases for COCA COLA CO that fall within the Publication Authorities where MEUNIER CARLIN & CURFMAN, LLC has filed.
