Data from IP Pilot highlights the top 10 universities based on patents granted between 2019 and 2023. We took the top 10 universities as listed in the NAI Top 100 2023* (based on patents granted in the US) and dove deeper into their data by including data not only on patents granted but also patents filed. We also extended the data to include 2019 through to 2023. Collectively, these institutions filed 77,944 patent applications worldwide and saw 28,364 of them granted between 2019 and 2023. At the forefront of this list is the University of California, a perennial leader in patent activity, filing an impressive 15,064 patents from 2019 to 2023, with 1,987 of those being granted so far. following behind is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), known for its cutting-edge research in a variety of fields, with 6,618 filings and 1,190 granted patents. In third place is the University of Texas System, which filed 13,459 patents and had 947 approved during the same period.

Notably, despite a slight slowdown in filings from some institutions, Zhejiang University in China bucked the trend by increasing its patent activity.
