You can use IP Pilot’s Search feature to identify applicants with notable filing activity in your jurisdiction, giving you a targeted list of potential new clients. Follow these steps to set up and customize your search for the best results.

To Search for Foreign Applicants Filing in Your Jurisdiction:

1. Go to the Search Feature

  • Click on Search in the main navigation panel.

2. Set Up the Applicant Search: In the search configuration area, choose Applicants from the first drop-down menu.

  • In the next drop-down, select From to specify the applicants’ country or region.
  • In the country or region drop-down, choose the country or region you wish to focus on (e.g., select United States to find US applicants).

3. Specify the Filing Jurisdiction

  • In the File At field, choose the publication authority where you want to find filings (e.g., select Canada if you want to see filings at the Canadian patent office).

4. Select the Time Period

  • Choose Prosecuted as your date filter for patents.
  • Select your desired From and To years.

Tip: For patent searches, avoid using the most recent year to ensure data completeness.

5. Add Charts or Additional Filters (Recommended)

  • To gain more insights, you can add charts to your search results (e.g., view the important representatives for these applicants or see a breakdown by filings in technical areas & fields).
  • Click Add Filter if you want to refine your search further.

For example, filter by the number of filings to focus on applicants with high-volume activity.

6. Run the Search

  • Once you’ve configured your criteria and added charts and filters, click Search.
  • IP Pilot will display a list of applicants that match your settings.

7. Review and Analyze Results

Use different charts to view additional information, such as:

  • Who are the important representatives for these applicants?
  • Which firms are representing them in Canada or locally?
  • What technical fields or industry areas are they most active in?

Example Scenario

Suppose you are a Canadian law firm and want to find the US companies actively filing in Canada, but are not yet your clients:

  • Set Applicants → From: United States
  • Set File At: Canada
  • Choose Prosecuted, select a two-year range (e.g., 2022–2023)
  • Add a chart for “Top Representatives” to see who is representing these companies in Canada.
  • Apply a Number of Filings filter for filtering applicants with at least a specific number of filings in the chosen period.
  • Apply a ≠ filter for Representative Name and enter your firm’s name to exclude your clients.
  • Click Search to view and analyze your potential targets.

Best Practices & Tips

  • Patents vs. Trademarks: Remember, patent publication data may lag, so avoid selecting the most recent year for patent analysis. For trademarks, you can confidently use the latest year.
  • Use Filters to Focus Your Outreach: Applying the filters helps you target applicants greatest business potential.
  • Drill Down for More Information: Add relevant charts to uncover key additional information directly in the search results for a more efficient and comprehensive business development approach.
