With IP Pilot, you can identify the countries sending the most IP filings to your jurisdiction and track which regions show growing potential inbound activity. Analyzing this data helps you prioritize your international business development and refine your partnership strategy.
To Analyze Countries Sending Inbound IP Work to Your Jurisdiction
1. Open the Search Feature
- Click Search from the left-side navigation panel.
2. Set Up Your Applicant Search
- In the first drop-down menu, change the option from Law Firms to Applicants.

- In the next drop-down menu select from.
- Leave the next drop-down menu blank to include applicants from all countries, regions, or continents.
3. Choose Your Jurisdiction and Time Frame
- With Filing At field selected, from the next drop-down select your jurisdiction’s publication authority.
- For Year Type, select Prosecuted.
- Choose a suitable From and To year (e.g., the last five complete years).
- Tip: Avoid choosing the current year for patent data, as publication delays may affect accuracy.
4. Add a Chart for Visual Analysis
- Click Add Chart and select Filings Over Time.
- This chart will help you visualize the trend of filings in your jurisdiction by year.
5. Apply the International Publication Authority Filter
- Click Add Filter.
- Select International Publication Authority and set it to your jurisdiction’s authority.
- This ensures you’re analyzing filings from international applicants, not domestic applicant.

6. Run the Search
- Click Search to generate your results.
- Results will display:
- Up to 1,000 applicants across 10 pages.
- For each applicant, their country, filing counts, and a yearly breakdown in the accompanying chart.
7. Export and Analyze the Results

- Use the Export button on the right to download your results as an Excel file.
- Your export will include two sheets:
- Sheet 1: List of applicants, their number of filings that match your criteria, their total filings, and their country of origin.
- Sheet 2: Applicant filings, broken down by year for the selected period.
8. Analyze the Data in Excel
- Open your export and group applicants by country of origin (from Sheet 1).
- Aggregate total filings and use the data to:
- Identify countries with the highest filing volumes.
- Track year-on-year growth from each country (from Sheet 2).
- Create charts or pivot tables to visualize which countries are increasing or decreasing their filings in Australia.
9. Refine Your International Strategy
- Use your findings to pinpoint high-potential countries where inbound filings are growing.
- Check your own law firm’s profile in IP Pilot:
- Enter your firm’s name in the Analyze section to see where your existing inbound cases come from.
- Compare this with the high-potential countries from your analysis.

- If you’re not actively receiving work from jurisdictions with strong inbound activity, develop a business development strategy to increase engagement there (e.g., attend events, build partnerships, or launch outreach campaigns).
